How I can help you
It is really more a case of how you and I can help you. What would you say to a client who was five minutes late for their first counselling session and then explained that she had been telephoned by her adult daughter that morning who had broken down on her way to school with her children. The client had gone to meet her daughter and taken the children on to school. She had then been to the chemist to pick up her bed ridden husband's prescription before going back home to administer it to him. She had then prepared a stew for the slow cooker, filled the washing machine and rushed to our appointment as quickly as possible. She then informed you that her main issue for counselling was how useless and good for nothing she was!? Alternatively what might you say to a prison inmate who is starting his fourth sentence for violent crimes and cites this as positive proof that the world is conspiring against him? Some of my clients are so confused they don't know where to start. Some know something is upsetting them but can't quite put their finger on it. Some know exactly what the problem is but cannot see how to manage or resolve the issue. More often than not my clients have the answers within themselves. By working together we can unearth the real root of their discomfort and shine a light on to it by examining their feelings and the way that they see their world. It is part of my role to try to see the client's issues through their eyes and perspectives so that I can understand better why they feel the way they do. Once my client knows the true cause of their distress they can make better informed choices of the most effective ways of dealing with the problem.
What to expect
You can expect to be listened to like never before. I might pleasantly surprise you with how much I remember of what you tell me of events and circumstances and how these make you feel. I might repeat some of what you say to me because you may gain a different perspective when someone else says aloud what you have been telling yourself. I might ask some questions to help me understand as well as is humanly possible what makes you feel the way you do and the way you see things. You need not worry that we might go to deep or too fast for your liking. These are your sessions. We will go at your pace and discuss only that which you wish to discuss. You can expect me to treat your information with utmost confidentiality. you can expect to feel that you can trust me.
I am 58. My life experiences are many and varied. I am a qualified counsellor and cyber therapist but like to think I have a lot more than that to offer. I have been a member of the Oxford University Crime Forum where I studied law and I have worked in factories and warehouses and as a hod carrier (builders labourer). I work at HMP Onley as a volunteer counsellor dealing with adult male offenders whose issues are extremely diverse and as you may expect can be very heavy. I have worked for the Acorn Centre in Nuneaton which specialises in areas around pregnancy including baby loss and general counselling for young people. I currently work for the Safeline agency where I see clients who have suffered sexual abuse either recently or historically. I have had my share of personal problems. I have known happiness and sadness. I don't claim to have all the answers but I believe I have a skill in helping my clients to find their own which are stronger and more permanent for coming from within.
