Personal message from the founder of PlusGuidance:
Hi there. I'm Nathaniel Smithies.
I’ve spent the last 3 years building PlusGuidance from the ground up so that people like me and you can immediately access high quality psychological support, from an experienced and qualified professional. I know how important that is, because I’ve been there.
I also know how difficult it is to take that step to actually seek help. You have that opportunity right now on PlusGuidance. You can remain anonymous, and in complete privacy you can message any one of our therapists and ask them anything you feel like.
As you’re here, you probably realise that talking therapies have helped a lot of people, but you just don’t know if they will help you with what you’re dealing with. And that’s OK - in fact it’s good to ask that question.
So let me try to answer it for you…
What is the evidence for therapy?
There is a large and growing body of scientific evidence that shows that talking therapies (i.e the different forms of counselling & therapy) are the most effective method for treating many mental health problems, like social anxiety, depression, OCD, eating disorders and PTSD.
Therapy is a highly effective standalone solution, and can potentially remove or reduce the need for pharmaceuticals - which can have pretty scary side-effects.
It’s also really interesting that more and more research is showing that having therapy over the internet isn’t just an alternative to face-to-face sessions, but in many cases it’s actually more effective - as well as being more accessible, cheaper and far more convenient.
It’s easy to ignore mental health issues as we get on with our lives, but overwhelming evidence shows that not dealing with those issues can potentially increase mortality by years, directly cause physical illnesses, and interfere with your work.
Sure, you can chat with a close friend about what’s bothering you, but it’s not the same as professionally-trained counsellors who know exactly what kind of help you need.
A strong predictor of therapy success is how you get on with your therapist. The benefits of finding a therapist that’s right for you, whom you trust and can open up to, are incredibly rewarding and can even be life-changing. That’s why on PlusGuidance we allow you to have as many free consultations as you like with different therapists, until you find one you feel comfortable with.
What is your current challenge?
I want to ask you a question - how are you feeling right now?
I know it’s hard to box all your feelings into one simple label, but you might find it useful to think about what you’ve been experiencing recently and see if one of the categories in the section below feels like it matches.
You can then search for therapists that are experts in dealing with that specific type of challenge, and start conversations with them.
All I will say is that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain from starting free conversations with therapists. For me, and for millions of other people, having therapy has been a truly wonderful and rewarding experience, and I sincerely hope you find that too.
Good luck on your journey - remember that at PlusGuidance, we are always here for you.
