Solution-focused brief therapy concentrates on your strengths and resources, rather than weaknesses and limitations so you can set clear, realistic goals in life – and achieve them. Your counsellor will typically ask you a series of questions (e.g. what your life might be like once the problem is solved) and will help you identify ways you have coped with difficult situations in the past, enabling you to recognise your potential. The techniques used encourage you to envisage how the future will be better once you have made the necessary changes to get there. You’ll respond well to this therapy if you are keen to embrace change, have a goal-orientated mind-set and lead a fast-paced lifestyle. Anywhere between 1- 8 sessions are ‘typical’ for this time-limited form of therapy, depending on the extent of your problem.
