How I can help you
Whether we meet face to face or online, counselling is a time where you can talk in confidence about the issues that are concerning you. I aim to provide you with a safe space to explore and understand the difficulties that you are experiencing. As we begin I'll ask you to tell me a bit about what you are struggling with and how you hope counselling might help you. Dependent upon the issue you bring will depend on how we work together. Some issues it can help to look at the past and find clues as to what might be causing the problem. Other issues it might be more helpful to explore possible solutions to a problem situation. The way we work will be unique to you but for me the most important thing is that you find counselling helpful.
What to expect
Before we get started it's really important that we agree how we are going to work together online, just as you would if you were meeting a counsellor face to face. The best way to do this is to click on Free Consultation. This will direct you to set up a Plus Guidance account where we can message each other confidentiality. We can then organise a counselling consultation to help us both to decide if I am the best person to help you at this time. I usually do this by email.
Please also take a moment to read my Informed Consent. By clicking on Informed Consent this will take you to my personal website, so remember to right click to also stay on this page too. My informed consent runs through some basic information about how I work and what to expect from online counselling. If you are unclear about any aspect of how I work online please do contact me and I'll be happy to explain more.
I am an accredited BACP registered counsellor with over 10 years experience of counselling, specialising in providing counselling online using email, instant messaging and video.
I have a experience in supporting clients with depression, low self esteem and individuals who are preparing to relocate overseas or who are returning to their passport country. Having lived overseas myself I have an understanding of cross-cultural issues including: parenting TCK (third culture kids); culture shock, the importance of preparing for returning to one's passport country and debriefing.
I have five years experience of cross-cultural counselling working with issues related to HIV/Aids and Intersex issues.
I am also trained in Online Coaching, which can be helpful with goal related issues e.g. stopping smoking, losing weight, gaining a qualification. (Coaching fees are £45 per email exchange - please contact me regarding purchasing online coaching).
If you are an expat living overseas and preparing to return 'home' to your passport country, you may have heard of the terms re-entry and debriefing. Often companies will provide a debrief as part of your re-entry package, to help you process your cross-cultural experiences. This is important but to arrive back more smoothly it is advantageous to start preparing several months (approximately 10 months) before you arrive back, especially if you have lived overseas for a number of years. If you have had a short term assignment/volunteer placement of a year or less, it can help to begin thinking about returning home around 8-12 weeks before you head back. This can help to reduce reverse culture shock and help you to settle into the next stage of your life back 'home'.
Pre:Re-Entry counselling gives you an opportunity to consider what you need to have a good goodbye as you leave and a more positive hello on returning. I use the RAFT model by D Pollock which takes you through four topics to help you prepare to return home. Dependent on what you need and past re-entry experiences, I usually advise between 4 - 6 email exchanges.
If you are a parent I also provide Pre:Re-Entry counselling to help you consider how to support your child through the re-entry process. Do contact me for full details.
